Remember the old arcades? Remember the sounds? Remember the joy?
I remember clutching a massive 10p and climbing onto a milk crate to get my first game of the classic Space Invaders. I haven't really looked back since.
Defender, Asteroids, Pac Man, Scrambler..... They were all up there - all 10p a game. The Games may be basic by todays standards but are still a huge amount of fun, nostalgic for some and highly addictive. You didn't need a rich persons ransom to play them.
They popped up in take aways and shops too. they were even crafted into tables (Galaxian) you could buy a full fat Dr Pepper and watch or look longingly at the game until someone rewarded your longing expression with a 10p donation. A huge wave of community bonding commenced from arcade games. It was all in the name of fun.
Getting your name on that top 10 was the goal. If anyone beat you, back you were, bashing those buttons to try and beat your nemesis. The top players were known, feared and revered by their 3 initials. Finally meeting the person you held in such high regard was either a blessing or a curse but until then - insert coin and let battle commence!!!
It was all new in the 80's. It felt like this could be the start of something big.
