Before smart trainers, before limited drops and before everyone suddenly became a sneaker expert online, there were ROOS. The trainers with zip pockets stitched into the side that somehow made every kid feel cooler the second they put them on.
Created in the late 1970s by American architect and marathon runner Bob Gamm, ROOS officially launched in 1979 under the name KangaROOS. The idea came from something simple. While out running, Gamm wanted somewhere practical to store his locker key. Instead of carrying it in his hand or risking losing it, he designed trainers with a small zip pocket built directly into the shoe. Simple idea. Genius marketing.
By the early 80s, ROOS had exploded in popularity. The pocket wasn’t huge, but that almost made it better. It became playground legend. Kids used them to stash coins, sweets, notes, bus fare and anything else that felt important at the time. Half the appeal was just having a hidden compartment built into your trainers. It felt futuristic.
At their peak, KangaROOS were selling millions of pairs worldwide and became a genuine part of 80s and early 90s culture. They sat perfectly alongside shell suits, BMX bikes, sticker albums and Saturday morning TV. In the UK especially, they became one of those brands that instantly dates a memory in the best possible way.
What made ROOS stand out was that they didn’t try to look sleek or serious. They leaned fully into fun. Bright colours, bold logos and that iconic zip pocket gave them an identity nobody else had. Even now, one glance at a pair is enough to transport people straight back to school discos, sports halls and PE kits.
Over the years the brand collaborated with athletes, musicians and designers, but for many people the real magic was always tied to childhood. The excitement of opening a fresh box. The sound of the zip. The tiny feeling that you were carrying secret technology on your feet.
Like so many great retro things, ROOS belonged to a time before everything became polished and over-designed. They solved a tiny problem, accidentally created a cultural icon and ended up becoming part of growing up for an entire generation.
Old’s Cool® remembers when trainers didn’t need apps, batteries or AI. Just a zip pocket and a bit of playground swagger.
Believe it or not, we have a pair of boxfresh Roos from 1980 on our retro items page. Go and take a look!!!!!
